The National Ignition Facility at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, California successfully fired all 192 of its laser beams at once for the first time, smashing the energy record for a laser by a factor of 20.
Although only a test over a very short period, the positive result gives some indicators that fusion power generation may not be too far away.
