Human Power!

I just thought had a slightly humorous idea for a green technology solution.

Think of your local Gym, lots of people running, cycling lifting weights etc. What if all these various exercise machines were designed to harvest energy. How much do you think a gym might save on it's energy bill, probably not a lot, but I wonder if anyone has everworked out what the average available energy per square foot is generated by a gym. Could be a great differentiator for exercise equipment manufacturers.

    Hello Ghamble,

    This is a great idea and the dutch are already on it, a dutch student even won an award for this.

    Even going to the Club is green these days, every dance move produces energy.

    And in hong kong they are already using this in the gym.

    Darn... beaten to the post, got to try to have these ideas sooner!

    I'm going to go off and try to think up some more ideas, perhaps a pedal powered ride on lawnmore with a flywheel Kinetic energy recovery system.

    I tried to think of positively the most ridiculous thing I could, and it already exists!!!

    The just no hope for the modern entrepreneur.

    Ok, a challenge, let have some ridiculous eco friendly ideas.

    Wind up hairdrier anyone?

    Still on the gym topic ... not only is there wasted energy from the people on the machines, but then they throw their kit into energy hungry washing machines, so we need a human powered laundrette nextdoor to the gym;

    A hydraulic system to transfer energy from the treadmills and cycles to hydraulic motors in washing machines.

    Use the stairmasters to compress and pump the coolant for the air conditioning.

    Heat exchangers on the air conditioning to heat water and tumble driers.

    Weight machines lift grey water to a header tank for washers.
