Snubber circuit

Former Member
Former Member over 15 years ago

Hi,

I am a student at a Faculty of Electronics, and I would like to make a research on Snubbers. I would like to make some simulations on some sort of medium complexity circuits protected by Snubbers(a TRIAC maibe, or IGBT ). Can someone post some sites where I can find some usefull circuits?

Thanks!

    Hi Alexandru,

Hope you are doing well. Generally for this type of stuff I would say to look in a book. The best book I've ever had on power supply design is Abe Pressman's. The information for the book is included below, if you have access to it check it out, Chpt. 11 is dedicated to the design of snubbers.

Switching Power Supply Design, 3rd Ed. [Hardcover]

Abraham  Pressman (Author), Keith  Billings (Author), Taylor  Morey (Author)

    4.8 out of 5 stars

If you still want a to check out a website, then go to switchingpowermagazine.com. You can register for free, If you look through the articles you're going to find one on the design of Flyback snubbers, check it out, it should give you more than enough info for your project.

I suggest that you work on a Flyback converter design, flybacks are the classical showcase of snubber circuits and how they work to minimize ringing and EMI in a design.

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,

    Jorge Garcia

    Hi Alexandru,

This a standard subber implement in a flyback converter. It is a nice one to start with. The RCD-snubber limits the voltage on the drain-source caused by the leakage inductance of the coupled inductor. The capacitor across the mosfet helps also for this but this capacitor also limits the dv/dt on the mosfet to avoid component problems and high EMI levels.

If you need help let me know.

    Best regards,

    Hi,

Thank you both for your help. It has been very usefull. I have tried these simple circuits and it's ok. Can you now suggest me a more complex simulation?

    Controlling a TRIAC or IGBT.

    I appreciate your help! Thanks.

    Hi there,

Can you share the results of the simulation? Plots and circuit parameters?

Triacs have RC-circuits across A1-A2 to limit dv/dt (fast dv/dt will turn-on the device without gate triggering). Sometimes there is a coil in series with the traic to limit di/dt (fast di/dt can destroy the device). There are special triac, called 4 quadrant traic's which don't need the dv/dt snubber but they require a certain gate-fire pulse. I used them in a project and they performed very nice.

    Best regards, Enrico Migchels

Try this one for good measure!

    Enjoy
