X-Caps discharge

enrico.migchels

Hi,

For those who struggle with the standby power requirements of these days... There is a way of lowering the standby losses of AC input devices (with X-caps > 100nF) by active discharging the X-caps with a Power Integrations IC.

Press release

Power Integrations has introduced an active solution for the X-cap discharge requirement, see the website

http://www.powerint.com/lp/capzeroUltimately the loss due to the usually required bleeders is avoided; the active solution dissipates at most 5mW @ 230Vac.

Best regards, Enrico Migchels

    Very Cool Enrico,

Very simple concept and something everyone can implement. The chip probably checks if there is any AC voltage to determine whether to open or close the internal switch.

    Thanks for the post.

    Regards,

    Hi Jorge,

I have samples on my desk. Be aware: if you use these chips you must use safety recognized resistors in series otherwise you will have trouble getting a safety release by the agencies (CSA/UL)

    Best regards, Enrico Migchels
