What would it take to build a high power Inverter?

Hi there,

Nowadays we as power designers have to make a choice: do we control our power converters analog or digital? Do we even have a choice? I can remember the task of controlling an AC induction motor (phase angle control) and there was no analog controller available on the market. They all had gone obsolete. I suspect this will be the case for more control products in the near future. The consequence is that traditional analog design engineers have to become more allround. They have a act a mixed signal engineers or even embedded design engineers to have the DSP's doing the control.

If we have to prepare ourselves for this task what is the best way to do it? What is a good way to start learning more about digital control and DSP? I like to build a high power DC/AC inverter (multiple kilowatts). Are there digital controlled reference designs available with open source C-code (and fast assembly)?

Share your experience or thoughts.

Best regards, Enrico Migchels

    Hi Enrico,

I don't think Analog Design will ever become obsolete, since we live in an Analog world. However digital control is starting to become more prominent and it has some advantages that warrant being in an Engineer's bag of tricks.

The main advantage of digital control is flexibility, you can easily adjust the control loop by simply reprogramming your MCU instead of having to desolder caps and inductors. The other main advantage of digital control is that the control loop can by dynamically adjusted in software to best cope with the load thereby maintaing a tight control loop. A good example would be a flyback converter that runs in the continous conduction mode at nominal load, however at light load the converter moves into the discontinous conduction mode region. An analog design could only be optimized for one of the modes with the other mode's performance degrading. With a digital control loop you could program two optimized loops and have the controller switch between them depending on the load, cool huh?

Here are some articles from Microchip which I'm sure you'll find interesting you can also look at the source code for the reference designs you'll get lots of ideas.
