Leaving on a TV or other appliance while heading out of the house has happened to all of us at one time or another. Not only is it potentially dangerous but it can become costly as well. Sassor, a Japanese development company, are designing a solution called the ‘Energy Literacy Platform’ to help us monitor how much energy is being used by appliances but also lets you turn them off wirelessly with the use of a phone. Energy Literacy Platform consists of an ELP module (placed between the outlet and the electronic appliance), ELP receiver (to receive information from the ELP module and transfer it to the computer), and ELP website (to display the energy consumption). On the ELP website, users can set a maximum electricity capacity (or a maximum financial capacity) for the ELP module. The color of the light on the ELP module will change from white to yellow with increasing energy consumption, and turn red as it approaches maximum capacity. The website displays interactive features of electricity consumption measured by the ELP module and access to past records of household energy consumption. The interactive features interpret the numerical data to make the information more accessible to its users which can be done through the use of a Smartphone app or through the website.
