Electric car design

I have recently been fascinated by the idea of power generation as well as the applications of this. So I have thought that sense cars like the chev volt use a gas generator to power the volts batteries. Now I had a thought of using a magnetic generator with the obvious power input to power output ratios. To either extend the range indefinitely or to have a self sustaining car. I do know that the idea of this although may be great sadly the application and science behind it i am not to familiar with although it seems to me to be a interesting concept to say the least.

Please if anyone has any knowledge of this either being done or thought of please let me know. Hopefully this is a idea that can make these more accessible for people. Although the environmental concerns are all well and good regaurding this matter I am truely only interested in the science of making this work. If this is a feasible I do wish to carry on in making such a design. Although if the effort would yeld to be fruitless based on others accounts ; I will en devour to try to find a solution to the inherent issues in evs.

    Hi Sean,

Unfortunately, humans have never been able to build machines that are 100% efficient, either generators or motors, so a generator requires more power to make it turn than it generates.

Electric vehicles can however recover some energy when they are slowing down using a technique called regenerative braking - where the drive motors become generators - converting the vehicle momentum into electric power to help recharge the batteries. The friction and air resistance encountered by all moving parts robs power from the system (converting it to heat), preventing full recovery of the available power.

    Doug
