What to use for power meterring

Hello,

I am developing a product that manages energy for retail application. I need a device that can measure the overall power usage (from a distribution board, and passed through a current transformer) and output a signal that I can read with a microcontroller. Ideally the device would be self powered. I have read that I might need a watt transducer, but I haven't been able to confirm this anywhere. Any thoughts as to where I should look?

    What you need depends on the application, if your system is to be used to challenge/compare with utility billing it must measure power the same way as the utility company. If it has some other purpose you may get away with something much simpler.

    What range of powers will you measure, how accurate must it be (at max and min power). Do you need to measure power or will current do ?

    It would probably be measuring about 10,000 watts give or take. I need to measure power, I don't really have the technical know how or equipment to convert from AC current to power usage. Accuracy isn't critically important, I think within 2 or 3% accurate should work just fine. It also doesn't matter that much how well it matches up with the utility, it just needs to be able to measure kwh and kw.
