Tiny kinetic (motion) charger?

ntewinkel

Hi All,

I just came across this tiny GPS sensor, for tracking pets, children, or whatever else. http://retrievor.com/small-and-lightweight-gps-tracking

I find it very interesting because it's the size of 4 US quarters stacked. That's about the size and thickness of the tip of my thumb (ok, I might have big fingers, but that's still small).

Within that space they fit the GPS tracker, a Cellular module, some kind of power supply (battery? or super capacitor maybe?) and a kinetic (motion) charger.

Maybe the most interesting bit is that it includes a kinetic charger so it never needs to be plugged in or placed on a wireless charging mat or such.

That reminds me of those watches in the 80s that wound themselves by simply wearing them.

I can see this being very useful in many types of applications.

Has anyone come across such a charger that would fit into such a small space? Or even anything remotely close to that size? The only things I've seen are much bigger (for charging cell phones and such).

Thanks,

-Nico

The only energy converter I was aware of was made by enOcean https://www.enocean.com/en/enocean_modules/eco-200-1/data-sheet-pdf/ but this is defintely bigger than a thumb! Really an interesting product…

That's a neat enocean product, thanks.

I just noticed more data on the Retrievor unit: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/retrievor-self-charging-gps-tracking#/

There they give the dimensions as 35mm diameter x 16mm thick, which is bigger than a stack of quarters (and almost 2 thumbs) - they may have been using the comparisons a bit loosely!

So the Enocean energy harvester can probably fit into that package size, maybe with some minor adjustments.

Also, I didn't realize before that they also have the top covered with a solar cell, which helps gather energy.
