Two Cool Energy & Power Projects – from Two Cool Design Challenges

Two element14 members have shown how easy it is to add energy harvesting or wireless power solutions to every day items:

In 2013:  ENERGY HARVESTING – where the challenge was to build a practical device prototype that could be powered by Energy Harvesting.

The Grand Prize winner gelmi used the WURTH ELEKTRONIK  IC-744885 Energy Harvesting Solution To Go Kit to aid his batteryless product design of a Carbon Monoxide Detector.

In 2015: WIRELESS POWER – Beyond The Phone – the challenge was to build a practical application where wireless power could make the world fun or safer.

The Grand prize winner ForcisConnect, a sailor, used the The Wireless Power Transfer Solution To Go Kit to aid his product design of a hermetically sealed, wireless powered transponder for people to communicate if lost at sea.

Why do you think it is taking so long for this technology to be more ubiquitous?

How do you see energy harvesting and wireless power solutions evolving?

In the Pi IoT Design Challenge probably some more examples will follow as the EnOcean sensors are part of the kit: EnOcean Sensor Kit - Bringing Home Automation to the Raspberry Pi . I'm not sure why this technology is not used yet (as far as I know) in more mainstream products, maybe because of the limited amount of energy available? For home automation applications it would be ideal, several Z-Wave (and similar) sensors now either need a battery or wired power. For actuators most of the time wired power is available, so there is less need.
