Yes it can. It is being done more and more. Solar on houses is being fed into the grid via an inverter. Inverters take energy (DC/AC, solar, wind, whatever) and convert it into grid voltages (synchronized to the grid frequency and voltage). I have developed inverters in the past for residential (50kW) and commercial (50kW to 2Mw) usages do these types of conversion.
