Ring Connector - Consumer Application Help

Question

I am trying to develop a conversion kit to connect competitors products to my controller. Most of the products use wire connectors and I can easily develop a conversion wire with the appropriate connectors. One of the products I am trying to convert has a ring terminal on the end of it. I am trying to find a solution that the average consumer can clamp or insert the ring terminal into as part of my conversion kit. I've attached a picture to show a mocked up converter and to show the ring terminal I'm trying to convert. Thank you for your ideas, Kristine

Hi Kristine, Any idea what voltage and current flow is expected on that lug? I think shabaz probably has the neatest and safest suggestion. I see your concern that not everyone will have the skills to do that, but I doubt you would find any other solution that is simpler and at such a low cost. Could the bolt approach be included into your controller enclosure, perhaps under a separate removeable cover? Another connector you may consider is a wire splice / insulation displacement connector. There are many available. Farnell wire splice range Something from the TE CoolSplice / 3M Scotchlok only requires the ring terminal to be cut off and pliers to squeeze the splice together. Just make sure you select the right size splice for the current, voltage and cable size requirements. Kind regards.

Ring lugs are normally for bolting to big terminals (or grounding / earthing a big metal case!). I think I would be included to user another ring lug and on the "interconnect" part of your connector and supply the appropriately sized nut and bolt? Would you be happy for your "consumer" to tightly bolt the two together? Then the other end you can use whatever connector you need?

What about another ring (your end) nut and bolt (to join the two rings) a sleeve and two cable ties to keep it insulated. Mark

Hi Kristine,

One idea could be to suggest to customers to cut off the ring terminal, and supply this type of connector, Wago 222 seriesWago 222 series (as an example - there are other similar ones too).

Otherwise you'd need some screw terminal block, and all that comes with it (the need to insulate it by placing it inside an enclosure). The Wago connector just needs the orange lever to be pushed up, the wire to be stripped, it is inserted into the connector and then the orange lever is pushed down.

Also, if the customer keeps the cut ring terminal end, they can always go back to the previous state, by inserting that stripped ring terminal end into the Wago connector.
