USB solar charger... issue :-(

Hello everyone. I have a DIY question for anyone who can help. I got the idea from a youtube video...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TrSUwZciExE

 

I'm constructing a USB solar charger using some old solar cells from garden lamps.

 

Each cell has an output of 2.3 volts.

I connected 4 cells together and I end up with a total output of 4.6 volts.

I connected a female USB port to it, then an iPod. It charged for about 30 seconds then stopped in full sunlight.

I thought maybe there wasn't enough voltage so I connected 2 more cells and I still end up with 4.6 volts and it wont charge.

I checked my connections and looked everything over and I didn't find anything disconnected.

 

Here's a picture. Anyone with advice?

    Do You have power supply with variable Voltage? It'll really help You.

     

    You need test minimum voltage for charging and current at this voltage. Next step is V-A charasteristic of your solar panels.

     

    If iPod have some detection for 5.0V you can join more panels to get 6.9V and use 7805 to get exatly 5V.
