Is it possible: dimming incandescent lamp with SSR with zero-crossing  switching mode

Hi!

I have read different opinions on that but is it even possible to use MCXE240D5 to dim incandescent lamp using microprocessor?

AC line is 230VAC, uC will take care of PWM and syncronizing with AC phase (sinewave) will not be a problem, SSR must be MCXE240D5 and no disturbing flickering is allowed. Of course voltage-driver(ULN2803A) between uC and SSR is used image

Some say that it will be ok, some say that only "random fire" will work.

I need to find solution using those specific SSRs.

Is it only possible via good code inside the uC or I should stop dreaming about it?

Thanks to all for answering,

F.

    Hi,

do you mean that you want to dim an incandescent light bulb with a relay?

If so, why not using triacs or IGBTs?

relays are not designed for dimming, you can get a lot of unexpected problems. I can imagine lot of noise, timing problems, Voltage-peaks extremely high, ... fire ¿?..  who knows!

You may want to use triacs or IGBTs. You will need to include a snuber circuit with an X2 Class Capacitor. There are triacs (BTA class) which include snuber circuit inside the chip. More things... maybe 1mh or 2mh Toroidal in series with the load if you get electromagnetic interferences while dimming. If you have difficult finding a circuit I can search for one that I always use, just let me know.

    Regards,

    Cristian
