Energy harvesting: changing requirements for a developing technology

Hi all I'm curious to know how design considerations and product requirements are changing for energy harvesting systems as the technology develops and becomes more familiar?

The sad fact is that it simply comes down to cost. That is why expensive solar options which are better fall to the wayside for mass produced less efficient alternatives. Latest example; Solyndra vs. generic solar panels. As someone who is working on an alternative energy project, I find that I will go with whatever works at whatever the cost.
