I know that eventually you can generate your own house hold power off grid. Now would it be worth it for one to have a small bank loan for such things or is this wishful thinking ???

Sean:
First of all, disregard everything Florian just said, he is living in a very old world. We have electronic inverters now for the past 25 years that convert the stored energy in batteries to high voltage AC power.
So yes you will need a storage system (like batteries) but your entire household power system remains the same.
Solar energy prices for residential have come down from well over 10USD/watt to under 2USD (for self installed) and under 5USD installed, just in the past few years, so yes now is the time to get in.
Remember that you actually do not have to go "off-grid", you can install a grid-tie inverter (or microinverters on every solar panel), and use the grid as your "battery". That is a cheaper and faster way to go solar,
especially if you have a reliable grid energy supplier.
Every 4 minutes now in the USA, a new solar power system is energized, you can join the thousands or 10's of thousands of us who are doing that to our own homes, and reducing our carbon footprint.

The efficiency of electronic inverters is low.
Can you put you life-supporting system depend on it ... 24/24? I dont think so.
Yes, you can use it sometimes with some degree of success, but at some point it will fail and you start paying again.
