I know that eventually you can generate your own house hold power off grid. Now would it be worth it for one to have a small bank loan for such things or is this wishful thinking ???

Hi Sean,
The payoff for a solar system depends upon where you live.
If you get abundant sunshine, then it might be worth it.
Only you can determine if the cost is worth having the power.
One thing to consider is the maintenance costs. YOU will be responsible for keeping the panels clean, checking that everything is working well and that you are getting the maximum return on your investment.
So you need to factor in the time you will have to spend to ensure reliable power.
As for "carbon" foot print issues, these are all bogus political issues. If it makes you feel like you are doing something positive fine, but there is NO evidence that efforts to slow carbon dioxide build up will have any affect at all on the climate.
