Hey guys, this Element14 thing seems kind of cool, although I can't find anything. If anyone sees this and want to get involved with our efforts or benefit from the efforts, to design a motor controller board that surpasses the existing options considerably, and becomes something the community can congregate around and focus effort on, I invite you to come join us on community.simpleFOC.com. (org?). There is also VESC, Odrive is now closed source unfortunately. There is a project called xESC to port the code of VESC, but the VESC code is very hardware specific and the boards it goes with are very expensive, about $190. We are hoping to cook up a board that is like $10 usd and just as good for many applications. Servos, power producing motors, fans, all kinds of good stuff.
