Poll: What Does the Smart Grid Mean To You?

Define the 'Smart Grid.' I hear a pause. Can't do it? You are not alone.

The Smart grid means different things to different people. Some people think its about long overdue grid modernization of control and transmission assets. And other people think it's more than that. It involves the aforementioned things plus a bevy of IT-related and customer-service related (i.e., smart metering) implementations, an more. The latter is the total approach. We'll call it the IoT of electricity. So, what does the Smart Grid mean to you?

Poll Question: I've listed a number of "smart grid" innovations currently being built and/or implemented. Which one best typifies the term 'Smart Grid' to you.

I voted some of the above because the first item is a bit daft. If we use Wind and Solar for a significant proportion of our power requirements then we will need serious energy storage and demand management…

I was at a hotel that tried to conserve energy maybe due to cost. The system worked because you had to insert your card key to use lights TV etc. When you left after a 15 second delay, thing switched off…

clem57 Home thing can be done with a simple use of PIR sensor system and that system can be powered via solar energy so no waste of energy for that as well.

I see numbers 2,3,5,6 as 'smart grid'. Pretty much 2 way comms to manage/view demand and enable some control over endpoints.

I was at a hotel that tried to conserve energy maybe due to cost. The system worked because you had to insert your card key to use lights TV etc. When you left after a 15 second delay, thing switched off. I thought it was a good idea. Why not for homes? It would help those who forget to turn off lights.

I voted some of the above because the first item is a bit daft.

If we use Wind and Solar for a significant proportion of our power requirements then we will need serious energy storage and demand management because both sources are intermittent.

The future of generation is hard to predict so any grid developments should be flexible.

We should stop the smart meter rollout right now and spend all the remaining money for that project on research into storage and CO2 removal from atmosphere.

In the end we'll need much smarter meters that can negotiate the optimum supplier and use of electricity in real time - the present meters are no where near this.

    MK
