[Failed] Electric skateboard backpack intends to get commuters to school and work in the morning

Movpack's rundown of how their skateboard backpack works on their Kickstarter campaign (via kickstarter)

Movpack is a new Kickstarter Staff Pick that is receiving quite a bit of attention because – let's face it – this skateboard backpack gives America yet another reason to be lazy.

The Movpack is a remote-controlled skateboard that is attached to a backpack so it can be easily carried or ridden to work, school, and beyond. The backpack has a battery inside that is used to power the skateboard, but can also be used to charge your electronic devices on-the-go. The backpack will also have room to store your stuff. But beware, this pack will pack a punch. With just the board and battery pack, the weight is about 17 lbs. While you wouldn't necessarily notice the weight while riding, it could get heavy if you planned on carrying books around with you. They seemed to have thought of a solution as the backpack also allows you to roll it around like a piece of luggage. Personally, I don't know which situation I find more annoying: having to carry 20 lbs all the time, or having to roll by backpack through busy city streets.

Still, it looks like something fun to try and I like the fact that you don't have to know how to skateboard to use this. But I do wonder whether I would really be able to keep my balance on a board going 15 mph (the Movpack's top speed). The board can be controlled using a wireless remote that allows you to turn, slow down and speed up. The project topped out on Kickstarter with $61,000 of the $100,000 they need. The biggest issue is really the price. If you want your very own Movpack, you'll have to spend at least $1190, with the next limited price bracket starting at $1340. Ouch!

While this is a nifty idea that appeals to the lazy streak in Western culture, it would be infinitely cheaper and beneficial for the health of America to actually learn how to skateboard. They should try again!

Don't know about the Solowheel, but Rynomotors monowheel looks like a broken bone/neck voucher to me image

Emergency brake on this thing looks impossible. I know you can (slowly) stop it by leaning backwards but that's not enough, imho.

Another try at cheap(ish) moving power. Why would I not get a motor for my bike??? It allows better control and still can be folded to carry store on a train/bus.
