The mDrawBot creates an image on an egg (via mDrawBot kickstarter page)
Robots have been threatening to take over jobs all over. Now, they're ready to invade the art world. Meet the mDrawBot, a 4-in-1 robot that can hold a pen or pencil and draw pictures as well as do laser engraving with the right equipment. While it can draw on paper, it can also create images on just about anything, including an easter egg. There are four different modes: mSpider, a robot with the ability to draw on a wall or white board; mScara, a robot that draws on flat surfaces and does laser engraving; mEggBot, designed to draw on things that are improbable to print on, like eggs or ping pong balls; and mCar, a three wheel robot car that draws its own movement tracks.
The mDrawBot works in conjunction with mDraw software, which is used to control the robot. It also allows users to import their own images and make the robot draw them. The mDrawBot can be used for more than making pretty pictures. It can also be used to draw data from other devices, such as heart rate monitors or to fill in charts. It can also be updated with different features like a gyro sensor or an accelerator.
Makeblock, an open source construction platform, are the ones behind the robot and are trying to raise funds for the device on Kickstarter. Their goal is to raise $50,000 with 43 days left to reach it. So far, the company has raised more than half of that amount. Those who are interested in having an mDrawBot for themselves still have a chance to pledge $159 for an Early Bird version, which will start shipping in May.
