Russia's new combat robot preparing for its debut (via RT)
Japan is at the forefront of robotics, but Russia may not be far behind with their latest innovation. The Central Scientific Research Institute of Precision Engineering Tochmash in Klimovsk, Moscow recently unveiled a combat robot for the military that is said to function like a human. Russian president Vladimir Putin visited the institute to see the robot in action, which wasn't as dramatic as you would expect. Rather than charging through the field and firing weapons like the new Terminator, the lanky robot, looking like a Daft Punk reject, sat on an ATV and slowly drove around a track. While it doesn't sound exciting, the robot did shoot a handgun five times hitting a target with each shot.
Designed for the Russian military, the robot has special sensors attached to its limbs that allow an operator to drive and control it remotely, but there are plans for it to also work on its own. The institute is hoping the robot will drive a vehicle, provide medical care, and travel on various terrains. A short video captured the robot driving around a track while an unenthused Putin looks on. Despite his lackluster expression he stated that he's very excited about this latest technology. Putin told the Russian Times “These advanced developments look really interesting, sometimes more like a sci-fi movie.” While the skinny robot may not be the next action movie star, it is a great step forward for Russia's military.
