New diet robot helps you lose weight

Intuitive Automata is introducing a new version of Autom, which is a personal robotic weight-loss coach. The robot has been shown to greatly increase a dieter's chance of success by providing the continuous, engaging support that hundreds of millions of people need to reach their weight loss goals. Autom has a short conversation with you every day to help you keep track of your eating and exercise quickly and simply. She provides feedback, advice, and encouragement to keep you motivated and no two conversations with Autom are alike. She is constantly adapting to you to better understand what will help you stick with your diet and exercise program. Autom's designers hope that people will become attached to the robot, who looks something like Eva from Disney/Pixar's WALL-E, and that the relationship will strengthen a person's commitment to better health. A camera in the robot's head keeps her blinking eyes turned towards a human while she's talking to him (“My eye movements can be a little strange, as you've probably noticed. The engineers are still working on getting it right,” as seen in the video). Though Autom does not yet operate with speech-recognition, she speaks in a not-so-bad fem-bot voice, while her words appear on a front side touchscreen, which the human uses to respond. Intuitive Automata will be selling Autom in the summer of 2011 and will be priced somewhere in the range of $500 to $600.

Indeed : ) Also before it got me thinking of health and fitness, since the blog post referred to the fem-bot, all I actually could think of was the scene in Austin Powers

However, it got me thinking, it would be very cool to have an open hardware and open source toolbox for constructing health and fitness projects!

We have the awesome Meditech from balearicdynamics for medical purposes, but would be nice to see (say) something we can construct into

off-the-shelf or custom bikes, attach to weights, or to ourselves, and so forth, to provide a programme/workout and stats, and upload results : )

Accelerometers and so on would probably be useful for this - a bit more advanced that the typical exercise computers built-in to gym equipment!

The new Pi Capacitive LCD screen could be useful for showing the information, a racetrack, etc., or perhaps a BeagleBone Black with LCD.

The benefit of Linux means the ability to have features like play music at little extra cost..

I have started riding my Iron Horse Sage bike 3 times a week and eliminating almost all carbohydrates from my diet.  I take a Caralluma Extreme 30 minutes before breakfast and lunch.  Also take complete vitamin supplementation with antioxidants daily.  It seems to be working very well for me.
