Drawing a person's sleep readings (via ibis)
In an effort to re-vamp their image an economy hotel chain Ibis, a subsidy of Accor, has enlisted the help of a robotic artist that paints your sleeping data gathered from a totally re-designed mattress. The robotic artist system is the result of a collaboration between Accor, ACNE robotics and BETC Digital to create publicity for their Ibis-run project known as ‘Sleep Art’. The robotic actuating arm paints a Pollock-esq representation of your sleeping patterns taken from 80 sensors embedded in the hotel guest’s mattress. Data collected from the sensors include temperature, pressure and sound, which are then sent via a Wi-Fi connection to the robot that isn’t actually in the room with you but rather at a distant location in Paris. A computer translates the sleep data using an art-based algorithm, which the robotic arm uses to paint a picture using actual brushes on canvas with acrylic paints rather than generating a digital image. Apparently a more restful sleep generates straight and smooth painted lines while a more turbulent sleep produces erratic strokes. The whole process is done live in real-time throughout the evening while you sleep instead of generating an image instantly with a lump-sum of collected data. As it stands right now, Ibis is choosing 40 lucky people who sign-up on their Facebook page to take part in trying out their art-de-sleep promotional try-outs beginning in Paris (on October 13-23), then over to Berlin (November 1-11) and finally on to London (November 19-23).
The robot's interpretations are just that, pre-planned symbols drawn for a certain action. Who is the artist that decided those actions? Humans get no love...
