Well if you’re a fan of photography, then this might just be what you’ve been looking for. The Swedish startup known as Memoto made an appearance at this year’s SXSW Interactive to show off their brand new device that aims to revolutionize life-logging by snapping photos of your life every thirty seconds.
The Memoto camera is a tiny, automated device that essentially provides users with a searchable and shareable photographic memory of their day-to-day events. The incredibly small device, measuring 36x26x9 mm in volume, is designed to capture stunning 5MP resolution snapshots every thirty seconds on 8-gigs worth of on-board storage. It even allows users to take pictures outside of the normal thirty second interval by double tapping on its surface. The camera powers up when users clip their lapel device to a collar, or wear it on a necklace, and lasts up to two days on a single charge of its Micro-USB accessible battery. To add to the Memoto cam’s already impressive features, a built-in accelerometer correctly re-orients pictures depending on how the camera is worn and a built-in GPS automatically logs time and location information for each picture! To turn the little guy off, users can simply unclip the cam and set it down or throw it in their pocket for later.
One of the keys to the success of the Memoto camera is the development of its accompanying Memoto iOS and Android device app. To make dealing with such a high quantity of pictures easier, the Memoto app automatically organizes all of the snapped photos into a timeline that is searchable by both location and time. This snazzy feature will come in handy if you’re having a hard time remembering where you might’ve left your keys, or what the name of that delectable restaurant was. The app will also provide users with social media sharing options for those that would like to share all of their day-to-day intimate memories with friends and family.
To account for the massive amount of storage space needed for all of those pictures, Memoto is also throwing in a free 1-year access to its unlimited supply of cloud storage. The life-logging camera will be available for $279 USD - though pricey, the company confirms they’ve already received over 3,000 pre-orders for the cam that has an expected delivery date in May.
Ultimately, the Swedish startup hopes start a new trend that will make life logging a mainstream activity for various reasons that may include life improvement tracking, health monitoring, and capturing those special everyday moments.
“It’s not only the stuff you thought you would want to remember, like beautiful sunsets, elaborate dinners and rambunctious nights out with friends,” said Martin Kallstrom, one of Memoto’s founders. “Ordinary moments can turn out to be special. But the only way to see that is to capture everything.”
Now every private moment is captures in 30 second intervals. Maybe not the best idea then.
