Communicating with robots is typically done through verbal communication, programming or through the use of a remote control. But what about communicating through body language? Researchers from Tsukuba University’s Groupware Lab have created two robots, called Talk-Torque and Talk-Torque 2, to see if communicating with robots is feasible through the use of body language. The robots are designed to bend and twist at the waist, tilt its head, and move its arms. The robot is equipped with three cameras in its collar and a laser range finder to determine a person’s position and direction. Experiments in non-verbal communication were conducted with the assistance of a sociologist and are still ongoing. The robots are to be used to explain various museum exhibits about robotics.
