What do you do when you’re a soldier and you can’t see the enemy hiding behind cover? You let the ammo find the target for you. The US. Army has recently unveiled their new smart weapon called the XM25. Already deployed to special operations units in Afghanistan, the XM25 the Counter Defilade Target Engagement System uses 25mm programmable grenades which air-burst next to a target. The new weapon uses a laser range finder that lets the soldier know how far the round needs to go and after setting the distance required, the gun programs the round to explode at that distance. The XM25 has an effective range of up to 700 meters and can hit targets hiding behind walls, rocks or trees and is 300% more effective than the current grenade launchers currently used by most units. The weapon system was designed by Heckler & Koch with Alliant Techsystems, while the targeting system was designed by L-3 IOS Brashear. The Pentagon expects to buy around 12,000 XM25’s with an expected price tag of only $25,000 per weapon. With all this time and money spent to perfect a better way of harming people, wouldn’t it be more cost effective to find better ways of not going to war?
