What’s six feet long, camouflaged, and totally modular? If you answered Israel Institute of Technology Technion Lab’s new robotic snake then you are correct. The new robot has completely independent modules with each one made up of logic control processors, inertial sensors, servo actuators, a power source and communications which means if something happens to the snake it can continue to function even without the missing or damaged piece. Judging from this picture it looks like the snake is also outfitted with a camera and IR LED’s as well. The robot houses all of its components in an aluminum housing making it suitable for rugged terrain and has many tactical deployment options ranging from search and rescue to reconnaissance. The snake is still being tested at Technion Lab but will soon be tested for use with the Israeli Defense Forces.
