Where to start my education? (Need robotics for MSc and PhD chemistry)

I am about to finish my honours year in chemistry. However I have decided that I want to design a robotic system that uses microfluidics for my masters and doctorate degree. I know some basic electronics can read circuits build amps etc. Also I have been playing with Arduino's. I have recently started to learn some python also, to have some ability to communicate with mechanical entities. My question is what would be the best route to take to get a working knowledge of robotics and programming? The system should contain a auto-sampler stepper motor that drives the pumps and a Peltier heat source. All of the latter should be adjustable. Would also like to write a GUI to simplify everything for an end user.

Your opinion would be much appreciated.

    Hi Martin,

There are lots of options for you to consider as you go forward.

I would suggest that you use the Cypress Semiconductor PSOC 4.

They have a great free IDE plus you get programmable hardware for digital and analog circuits easy to integrate with your software.

You can do the user interface with python or you might look at the Processing interface, also free.

PS, at what level are you looking at in Chemistry.  I am looking at a new atomic model and am interested in finding someone with molecular chemistry understanding to bounce ideas off of.

Thanks for the reply. I appreciate it a lot. Iam currently busy with medicinal chemistry. Synthesizing benzodiazepine drugs. I would gladly help

Take a look at VSEPR theory. Most chemists use it at the moment for geometry of molecules.

Great, I will get in touch with you as I get further down the project.

Right now I am redefining the Periodic Table with my new atomic model.  So far it is providing great insights as to why certain elements work well with others at the atomic level.

    Thanks
