Sensors used on faucets, trashcans, etc.

I'm trying to find infrared reflectivity proximity sensors -- the type used on water faucets and self-opening trashcans or similar.

 

I need it to activate (DC or trigger pulse, on or off, doesn't matter, I can make do) when an object is from 4" to 6" away. I'm not having any luck looking online -- everything I can find is absurdly expensive ($75 to $400).

    My wife bought some really inexpensive under the counter lights that have a small microcontroller, LED lights and an IR LED/Sensor pair inside with batteries for power.

     

    I would look for these products on line and then repurpose the parts.

     

    Always more than one way to get neat parts.
