    I think you are referring to 'elastomeric' connectors (zebra stripes) used on LCD screens here.

     

    They just act as a high density ribbon cable between the conductive pads on the LCD panel and the conductive pads on the PCB containing the display drive electronics.

     

    dougw used an elastomeric connector in one of his micro:bit projects for PCB to PCB (rather than PCB to LCD) which may be of interest:

    If you can discover how to identify the components, you get one step closer to re-purposing them. List a integrated circuit number (part number) on this site and you no doubt get responses. Identify the device the component came from Ti66 calculator, you may something as well.
