How important is sustainable manufacturing?

I read a recent benchmarking report from the Aberdeen Group about sustainable production/manufacturing and what's driving companies to take a closer look at gaining efficiencies in the mfg. process. And last week, Berkeley National Lab & ISMI released a benchmarking tool for semi fabs to help them benchmark and improve their energy and water efficiencies.(http://www.electronicsadvocate.com/2009/11/11/benchmarking-tool-helps-semi-fabs-meet-sustainable-manufacturing-goals/)
Is sustainable mfg. becoming a bigger issue at your companies? How is it impacting engineers (in design, production, mfg., etc)? Any feedback would be welcome.

    Hi Gina,

     

    As designers concentrate on low power solutions, the manufacturing aspect of the design cycle (chips, boards and assembly) is having a bigger impact on every product's carbon footprint. I think initiatives like this are great, especially if the recommendations are easy to implement, then the manufacturer will save money and hopefully pass these savings on to their customers. And of course massive plants like these, even saving 10% of the resources they consume can make a huge difference to the environment.

    I am in a light assembly environment, with small qty builds. We are expected to track,log and monitor productivity.

    Then with the results, see if it is: man, machine or method that we can improve. When business is slow, we all tend to have

    more work, because small orders take as much work or more to do, then when we are receiving large orders.
