Anyone who has ever played MechWarrior knows how invaluable a railgun can be, especially when it’s housed on a Madcat. While we don’t have 100 ton war Mechs to devastate the battlefield the US. Navy does have a railgun and with it, have achieved a world record. The Navy’s new gun fired a 23 pond projectile with 33 megajoules (traveling 5,500 fps) at a distance of 110 nautical miles. The electromagnetic railgun eliminates the need for conventional propellants and typical high explosive warheads which would be beneficial for ships giving them increased space in an already confined environment. Rear Adm. Nevin Carr, chief of naval research, says that, “"The 33-megajoule shot means the Navy can fire projectiles at least 110 nautical miles, placing Sailors and Marines at a safe standoff distance and out of harm's way, and the high velocities achievable are tactically relevant for air and missile defense, this demonstration moves us one day closer to getting this advanced capability to sea." Now if we could only get a towering Mech to bolt it on to.
