France is known for many things such as good food, beautiful landscapes and artist Claude Monet. But what about robotics? France is fast becoming a contender in the robotics field that’s started with their mainstream introduction of Aldebaran Robotics first robot Nao. Now with the company’s collaboration with other French research partners they plan on giving Nao a big brother known as Romeo. The robot is designed to assist the elderly and disabled with their daily chores. Unlike Nao however, this robot will be superior in almost every way including its height, which is 4.5 feet tall. Other innovations that Romeo will receive include articulated feet, communication through vocal commands and gestures, and will even have a back bone with 4 vertebrae. While Romeo is still in the developmental stages however it will also include 37 degrees of freedom with 2 DOF for both eyes, 1 DOF for both feet and 4 DOF for the backbone. Not too shabby for a prototype. For more information on Romeo please visit: http://spectrum.ieee.org/automaton/robotics/humanoids/france-developing-advanced-humanoid-robot-romeo
