Techno-savvy people’s homes collect dust just as much as anyone’s, but they tend to use robots to help with the vacuuming such as a Roomba unit. While that’s good and all, I would prefer a robot with more simplicity to do my cleaning and Dave Hakkens’ new robotic vacuum looks to do just that. His ‘spherical’ design was inspired by a hamster ball and is rugged enough to use in public places. The internal components of the Dustball are light on the specifics but Dave say’s that it moves by shifting its own weight instead of being powered by tiny rodents. The robot uses a motor to generate the vacuum suction but also uses it to blow out a tiny amount of air to move dust in hard to reach places. “Usually there is no interaction with a robot vacuum. I created a little friend just rolling around and which you could push or kick in a direction to clean. It's has no trouble with cables or anything like that, it's strong, and when it rolls before your feet you just kick it out of the way,” said Hakkens.
