Named after the Aztec rain god this robot isn’t really a robot per-se, but rather a one foot wide, 20 inches long and 8 inches high RC vehicle. Designed by engineer Hugo Armando Guerra Calva who graduated from the National Polytechnic Institute, the robot has 4 X 4 traction, two on-board cameras that can turn a full 360 degrees, and its own front-end headlamps. All video taken by Tlaloque 1 is transmitted to the operator using a computer screen. Tlaloque 1 was used to capture video of a newly found 2000 year old tunnel found underneath the Feathered Serpent Temple, in Teotihuacan Mexico and to determine whether or not it is safe for archeologists to enter. RC vehicles with cameras attached have been invaluable for search and rescue operations it was only inevitable they be used in archaeology as well.
