Linear drive (double acting)

Former Member
Former Member over 9 years ago

Hello,

I am trying to replace a double acting pneumatic cylinder by an electric driven linear drive.

A two segment funnel is opening by the cylinder. The product in the funnel(0.2-2Kg) helps to open. To stop the funnel from opening a force of 70 Newton is needed. This pull-force is needed for 3 second out of the 4.

The specs i need are the following:
Stroke: 25mm
Pull Force: 70 Newton (only when stroke = 0)
Push force: 5 newton(when stroke is +20mm)
Duty cycle: 80%

I hope this is all the information needed, if not, i'd like to hear.

Kind regards,
Stef

How fast does it need to move? There are lots of (expensive) sealed electric actuators and jactuators on the market, but usually they move quite slowly. It might be less costly to use a high ratio gearmotor…

    Hi Stef,

Perhaps these parts may be useful: Nanotec: L35 Linear Actuators with Lead Screw/Fine-Pitch Screw

    (Just a guess - I'm no expert).

By the way, this post is in the wrong place, 'Linear Technology' is the name of a firm that make microchips, not linear drives.

Easy to get wrong if you're not familiar with the firm LT.

Probably 'Industrial Automation' might be the best place.

    Hi,

Thank you for reminding me to move the discussion to the right topic and helping me out.

The following note makes me questioning the actuator:
"Please note: The force and power ratings specified in the data sheets are based on a duty cycle of approx. 10% to 20% and must be reduced accordingly for higher values."

WIth this type of actuator a duty cycle of 40% is needed. For example, with a solenoid a constant power is needed to keep the funnel closed and so the duty cycle will be around the mentioned 80%.

Because the actuator will be used in a "dirt flying/sandy" environment the threaded screw wouldn't be the best pick i guess.

Unfortunately I don't know of a suitable part, that was just a best-guess selection from me, but I think it would be worth giving them a call/e-mail, in case they  have something in their product catalog that more closely suits your needs.
