Sensor question...

What are the ways I can detect which side of a card is touching a pad?

I was thinking, is it possible to putting one piece of metal on one side and two on the other...

Is this doable?

What kind of a card? What kind of a pad?

If the card is colored, you could detect that (lighter or darker).

There are some good pressure sensors out there. You could break the problem into two parts, (1) is card touching pad and (2) which side (face?)

Give us a bit more information...

The card can be coloured.  It can have grooves.

If something has to be embeded it has to be small cause the surface area is small.

The sensor pad would be perfect if it can be flat and the size of a mouse pad.

So you have a mousepad and you want to tell if a playing card is face up or face down?

but not a playing card.... I have several small cards.  I need to know which card and which side is touching the area.

I want them place one at a time on the area and a sensor reads the card telling me what card and what side is touching it.

    Thanks for any ideas image

You could perhaps have this 'pad' as a kind of illuminated box, with a transparent acryllic top, and RGB sensors where you want to place the cards. Then when you place the cards down, the sensors can tell which way round the card is placed. As for telling when the card is placed, it's simple - all you need to look for is a sudden change in colour readings of the sensor, perhaps only telling you when it reads a colour that it expects (i.e. a bright blue face of the card, as opposed to someone's hand accidentally touching the pad).

Have you considered RFID, to identify which card? Then color or dark/light to tell which side?

    Mutazoid,

What is your application? What kind of sensor? Sensing contact on a surface is straightforward. Couple as many surfaces as you want. It all comes down to how the software handles the input.

    Maybe something like this:

    https://www.sparkfun.com/products/11195

    It's a little expensive though...

There's another one from SparkFun, and it's cheap, but its REALLY tiny, so probably not the best option!
