shabaz, you are right the pi is overkill, but so is an arduino. You should look at the TI MSP430 Lauchpad board for 10 bucks and it runs very low power and you can even put it to sleep but it will wake up if it gets and interrupt from the keyboard. The Launchpads have a great eco system for them as well called booster packs. You can download CSS which is their version of Eclipse IDE.

    now about your door installation:

    1. only put a "dumb" keyboard outside, so your system cant be hacked. BTW make sure that you put a "fail safe" switch in side it, if it is opened with the system armed. I used to run them via RS232

    2. put your brains inside your house.

    3. you can buy commercial solenoid door strikes cheap enough so don't try and build your own. (less than $40)

    4. remember when you loose power your door will unlock. So use a batter back up. Remember you will have to supply power for the cpu + keyboard + the transformer for the strike + the strike itself.

    5. and also one last thing when you are going away for an extened time use a dead bolt.

    Enjoy,

    Cris H.

If you get more ambitious you can add data loging ie one code for one person. Also with this in mind you can now turn on or off some lights a well
