Engine oil level

I would like to measure the level of a diesel engine's  oil through the dip stick tube using a Electro-Optic Type sensor. Diesel engine oil is very black. Could a Electro-Optic sensor be made that thin or is there another sensor that will do the job using the dip stick tube. This is to avoid damaging the engine while your driving the car.
