Sensor to measure road bumps

netnut
netnut over 12 years ago

I am looking for a sensor to measure road bumps i.e. the linear vertical distance travelled as a vehicle (bicycle or car) travels horizontally on the road.

One output would be a graph of the vertical distance travelled vs the horizontal distance travelled. Would be good to have the cost under $100, output can be on bluetooth, serial, wifi - I can figure out this part later.

Any inputs appreciated.

Thx,

Netnut

sanjay.. in my view there are two ways to do this...

    1. if you use a 3 axis accelerometer you will have to smooth the output but it will also give you a map of your course in real time.

    2. you could just use an altimeter sensors some resolve in fractions of an inch.. here is the problem with this you will have to select what is ground? this type of sensor reads above sea level. so again there is work to get the output.

maybe the rider presses a button that says "this is the floor". then again you will have to smooth the output and adjust if you are climbing or descending on a hilly route.

problem you really want a CPU with 32bits and if you are going to "map" your course you need some sort of database.

and most likely some extra memory like a thumb drive or some small ssd card.

    CPU choices:

    1. if you are going to map on board then you going to need the memory etc. look at the BegalBone.. boots in to Angstrom (Linux) and its about $90.00

    2. if your not going to map you could look at the Stellaris LaunchPad from TI but its only 13 bucks..  and it has floating point.

    they are both ARM CPUs..

    Good Luck
