Hi Guys, Any ideas on what sensor to get to detect the presence/absence of a tungsten wire with a diameter of 0.5mm?

You could apply a large voltage and current to it, if there is a tungsten wire then it will glow. But not for long.

A non-contact metal detector doesn't induce hazardous voltages. But what about feeding it through a ferrule that optically detects when no wire is in the hole?

Hi, As you no doubt know, your question has insufficient information, and zero context. You might need to give that some thought and then come back with the detail if you wish. Placing this here not…

Just to add more context. I am putting together a machine that bends tungsten wires into a specific shape. The wire is dispensed from a 5-10m roll. I am looking for a non contact sensor that would let me know when the wire is depleted.

Unfortunately due to safety reasons( and for the end application of the wire) as the machine is half way through with allowances for minor mods, I won't be able to apply any kind of voltage into it.

Would be glad to provide further information if need be. Thanks guys.

How about a micro switch with small roller.

0,5mm tungsten wire will be quite stiff.

I found these on Farnell, there are lots more:
