Has anyone used a Person-Sensor from UsefulSensors?

I came a cross a project on Hackster.io - Fleet Management with UsefulSensors Person-Sensor that uses a Person-Sensor that is the first product from Pete Warden's new startup, UsefulSensors.

This sensor is part of the Sensor 2.0 initiative that incorporates the ML processing into the sensor rather than using an "external" processor..  Looks like a neat low cost sensor ($10) that would be easy to use due to its tightly constrained use case (face detection and recognition).  Besides the ease of implementation, the other benefit is data privacy since image data is not available outside the sensor.  

The sensor is a Sparkfun product and it is currently not in stock and I haven't seen any in distribution.

I was wondering if anyone in the community had tried one out.  I am a bit concerned that since a feature of the sensor is that it is not updatable, that any bugs or enhancement would mean that you would need to replace the sensor.  I guess that at $10 that it might be an acceptable tradeoff.  I'd love to try one out to see how well it performs.

  • That's a really interesting and, well, useful, sensor!

    It appears that this company is brand new, founded in March 2022, and only just released that sensor just over a week ago, judging by a blog post by their CEO on Oct 20th.
    There are a couple of projects in Hackster.io released around that same time - I'm guessing it's by their own people.

    Maybe it's not in stock "yet" ? or do you think they already sold out?

    For what this thing does for $10 I can see it being in very high demand for a while.

  • I wonder if anyone has done a competitive comparison with this Person sensor  and the Nicla ME with a camera. The Nicla sensor is much more expensive,  but perhaps the comparison would reveal functionality-features difference

    I haven't seen any documentation what camera or processor is used on the Person-Sensor, but the Nicla Vision is a totally different beast.  It has an STM32 dual core (M7/M4) processor and lots of Flash and RAM, plus a microphone, a 6 axis IMU, a time-of-flight distance sensor and WiFi/BLE in addition to the 2MP camera.  I guess that might justify the 10X cost difference.

    The Nicla Vision would violate the principles of data isolation for privacy, low implementation complexity and certainly low cost Relaxed.  That being said, I really like the Nicla Vision - but I probably could not justify deploying a lot of them.
