               thankyou sir,

You might be able to use a capacitive sensor to detect entrance and exits through a doorway.

    Just a few examples.

    Interesting problem.

    How large is the room?

What is the maximum number of people?

How long can the count take to complete?

    How much apparatus is allowed?

Does the system need to be covert?

    What is the maximum budget?

What type of floor does the room have?

Does it need to work in different rooms, or always the same room?

If you are looking for a research project, a really novel way to measure the number of people is to measure the volume of air in the room, which can be deduced from the acoustic resonant frequency of the room, which may be deduced by analyzing the acoustic spectrum in the room, perhaps just using ambient sounds.
