Animated shoes... now we're talking.
Are you the type of person who needs to have so many pairs of sneakers to coordinate with your outfits that you need a separate closet for them? Does most of your paycheck go to yet another pair of kicks in a different color? Then you may want to pay attention to this new ambitious crowdfunding campaign. ShiftWear are sneakers with the ability to change their color and design on the go. It works with a smartphone app and color e-paper on the side of the shoes. There are various static designs and even animations on the app that allows users to change their style within a matter of minutes. Keep in mind, the static images will consume no power and your pick will stay until the user changes it. And yes, the shoes are machine washable.
The company believes ShiftWear will also be great for artists as well as the fashion conscience. Not only will the app let users choose the design they want, it will also connect them to a proposed store with new art from artists all over the world. Those interested will be able to buy these designs right from the app and will then be on the shoe in seconds.
The thought of wearing shoes that uses e-paper can be a bit troublesome. How sturdy can these shoes actually be? The sneakers made by ShiftWear are waterproof and the soles are even coated with Kevlar Fibers making them resistant to the normal wear and tear of normal sneakers. There are even flexible electronics in the shoes that charge with each step. Even better, users can choose which style they prefer: high, medium, and low tops.
There are 19 days left to go on the IndieGoGo campaign, but ShiftWear has already reached its goal of $25,000. The funds are now up to $119,700. To get a pair of these unique sneakers for yourself you'll have to pledge $150 to get a pair of L1s, the low cut model. If you have some more money to burn and want something fancier, there's the M1 Classic, which displays designs on the entire shoe unlike the other models. These will cost you $250.
A shoe that's practically fully customizable? It sounds too good to be true! Pledge with caution. The project certainly is ambitious, but it will take about $250,00 to make it happen. When backers finally get their shoes hopefully they'll look as good as the video makes it seem. For now we'll have to deal with an endless supply of Converse.
