A short video about putting LEDs in fake flowers
As you may know, light-up flowers are the primary design element of my weather-reading Spring Hoodie. But how to illuminate them?
Neopixels
Small, addressable, and generally easy to use, I'm a big fan of Adafruit's Neopixels. I used them in both of my hat projects. So Neopixels were a natural choice for making light-up flowers.
But how would it look?
I had no idea if it would look any good. So I bought about six dozen flowers from a local craft store--a mix of cheap and less cheap, large and small. And I took them apart.
Surprise!
It's like fake flowers are made for holding LEDs. They all have a convenient hole in the center, perfectly placed for running wires to an internal light. I soldered four short wires onto a Neopixel and connected them with alligator clips to a Flora running a strand test sketch.
It looks beautiful. Seriously, the video doesn’t do it justice. When the portals don't hide the light source, I'll either glue them down our add a circle of vellum to diffuse the light. It looks great. I feel like this is a technique I'll come back to. Starting to plan out what flowers go where...
