The various styles of Blocks smartwatches (via Blocks)
Smartwatches may just become the best option for management on the go, but they don't always have the features you may need. What if you could customize your smartwatch to be tailored to your lifestyle? That's what designer Dave Hakkens hopes to do with his latest project Blocks, a smartwatch with customizable features. Users can pick their preferred features, which includes GPS, fingerprint scanner, heart monitor, flashlight, USB stick, environment sensor, microphone, NFC chip, audio jack, and camera among many others.
Sport and fitness people will be the first to jump on this watch. With the blood oxygen monitor, activity logs, and motion sensors, it seems like the ultimate fitness trainer. The look of the watch can be changed with removable module covers to change color along with circular and rectangular faces to fit your preference. Users even have the option of swapping out modules as often as they like. The various modules fit together, making up the band of the watch ensuring wearers are stylish and technologically savvy. As we all know, these blocks require power. There is no word on the power demand of any one module.
The idea for Blocks was born out of Hakkens' first project Phonebloks, a fully customizable smartphone, which has since been bought by Google Motorola as Project Ara. Blocks is currently funded by Intel and will use its software along with Samsung's OS. The company is currently working toward Android, iOS, and Windows Phone support. The innovative smartwatch isn't available just yet, but will be ready for crowdfunding next year. Hakkens hopes to get the first wave of Blocks shipped out by the end of 2015.
