Eco Tech Marine brings the internet of things to aquariums

During my research for “Project Goldie,” I found fish tanks have come a long way over the past couple of decades. Materials and technology advances have made it easier than ever to keep aquariums clean, pump in fresh oxygen, and provide a proper nutritional amount of food for the diet of fish. Believe it or not, the internet of things is now beginning to invade the fish tanks along with everything else. It is about time.

Eco Tech Marine is a company dedicated to engineering the best products to keep aquariums healthy. Their latest product to be released is the called the ReefLink. What this will allow users to do is to control their aquarium and aquarium accessories wirelessly at home or while away. Currently, the ReefLink will only work with products available from Eco Tech. Therefore, lets take a look at a couple of their products currently offered.

First is the Radion lighting. It is offered in a XR30w and XR30w Pro version. Both offer a water resistant cooling fan, capacitive touch exterior controls, and programmable lighting modes. The XR30w features 32 energy efficient RGB LEDs while the Pro version offers 42. In addition, with the Pro, users will have the capabilities for a full color spectrum output from 405nm ultraviolet light to 660nm hyper-red. These both offer wireless capabilities to communicate and sync with other Eco Tech products.

Another popular product is their VorTech water pumps. These pumps can handle anywhere from small household tanks to large zoo sized tanks. Three different pumps are offered, they are the MP10, MP40 and MP60. All of them have a similar low profile structure with a magnetically coupled design. Their largest pump, the MP60, can handle up to 7,500 gallons per hour and will consume anywhere between 10-60 Watts of power. No wires or electrical components will ever touch the water making it an extremely safe and friendly pump. Furthermore, just as with the Radion lighting, these pumps feature wireless technology that can allow it to sync and communicate with other Eco Tech products.

Now the ReefLink comes into the picture. Before, the products communicated with one another over a specific radio frequency. The ReefLink will communicate with the products over this frequency and then transmit that information over Wi-Fi. It acts essentially as a middleman or bridging mechanism. This will give users the capabilities to control their lighting and water pumps through specially developed apps. They can be used with tablets or smart phones and will even allow a user to change the programmable patterns in operation.

Set up of the ReefLink is as easy as it can get also. Placing the Reeflink anywhere within the range of the equipment and Wi-Fi router is all it takes. An LED ring on the box will inform users of the status of their connection and, if needed, an Ethernet connection is available if no Wi-Fi connection is available. Eco Tech is definitely revolutionizing the way fish tanks are maintained and built. It is interesting to see technology integrate and change the way everything has traditionally worked.

Things have clearly changed from my days of having fish in the 1960's.

All of these high tech tools will clearly improve the health of the tanks and the fish.  Also the convenience of having a lot of actions done automatically makes having the fish a more enjoyable experience for the owner.
