Sony develops 11Gbps internal wireless connection

GardenState

At the ISSCC conference in San Francisco Sony today presented details of a millimeter-wave wireless intra-connection technology that realizes 11Gbps wireless data transfer speeds inside electronic products such as television sets.

Sony’s system uses electromagnetic waves with a frequency of 30GHz to 300GHz and wavelength between 1mm and 10mm.

Specifically, Sony has integrated energy efficient millimeter-wave circuits on 40nm CMOS LSIs, with an active footprint of just 0.13 square mm including both the transmitter and receiver.

Since the Sony system has a range of only 14mm its application will be limited to intra-IC connections. Still, by replacing wires and internal circuitry with wireless connections, this technology should enable a reduction in the size and cost of ICs and other components used in electronic products.

I think I would rather have things hard wired for reliability purposes.

Wouldn't this drive up the cost of the end product, due to more expesive internal components?

My initial reaction was the same as yours. Sony's explanation, however counter-intuitive, is the following:

"By replacing physical circuitry in electronics products with high speed wireless connections, this new data transfer technology reduces the number of wired connections and minimizes IC use, to simplify the IC package and printed circuit board. Furthermore, because the data transfer occurs without contact, this enhances the reliability of movable and detachable parts within the product."
