In his keynote presentation yesterday at ISSCC, Greg Delagi, senior vice president of wireless at Texas Instruments presented his views on the future of mobile handset design.
Delagi predicted that the exponentially-growing computational requirements created by advances in video capture, graphics, display, always-on broadband connectivity and Human Device Interaction (HDI)—such as no-touch sensing of hand and finger movements-- would require an additional 1000X increase in performance by 2015. Since battery technology has not kept pace the TI VP noted that there will be an energy gap developing unless a power efficiency increase on the order of 100X can be found.
CMOS scaling should cover the industry’s power efficiency needs for the next three years, according to Delagi, but then after that……?
